A Guide to Treasuries

Etsy-treasuries are an excellent way to showcase the work of your friends and fellow group members. They are not meant to be used for self promotion – while it is allowed to use one item from your own shop, it is frowned upon by the Etsy community. Very often the items that are shown on the frontpage of Etsy are taken from a treasury.

There currently are two different treasuries – the main Treasury and Treasury West. Both work the same way, and both can be basis for a frontpage. A treasury has spots for 12 items that everybody can see, plus 4 alternates that only the curator can see.

You can only curate (i.e. make) a treasury of your own when the treasury numbers are sufficiently low. New treasury spots will appear as soon as there are less than 333 treasuries in main or less than 222 treasuries in Treasury West. Do not just go by “time left” – towards the end of a treasury cycle lots of curators delete their own treasuries in order to make a new one! As soon as it’s 332 treasuries in main the opportunity for curating one will appear – type in a title, and you’re ready to go. Make sure to fill the spots for alternates, too - Frontpage won’t show items that have already been sold but replace those with the alternates. A great guide to treasuries can be found here.

How to make a visually appealing treasury:

Choose a theme – and make up an interesting title for it. Themes can be anything from colours to “things”. Choose items that are well photographed. Choose a variety of different types of items if you go for a colour theme, or a variety of colours (or materials or media etc) if you go for a “things” theme.

Search fitting items by using the Etsy-search tool. You want to showcase the work of your fellow group members (it is okay to add items of non-group members and thus to make WETsy more popular, but it would be great if your treasury shows a larger number of WETsy members. :) ), so type “WETsy” in the search-field and choose from the results the items fitting your theme. If you have a colour theme or a theme like “Halloween”, add “Red” or “Halloween” to your search. Remember that red can be dark red, or burgundy, or merlot and so on. Not all members “colour code” their items like this, so it is best to search for synonyms, too.

It can be helpful to have a treasury prepared in advance by using the Poster Sketch Tool. You can move the items around until you are pleased with the result, and then copy the item IDs into a text editor for later usage. Don’t prepare a treasury too far ahead of time – the items you chose may have been sold or expired meanwhile.

On the other hand – it can be fun to make up a treasury as you go, inspired by a sudden thought of the moment. :)

How to get your treasury noticed:

• Post a link to your treasury in the weekly group thread in Etsy forums.
• Post a link to your treasury on your own blog or facebook or twitter.
• Post a link to your treasury in the WetCanvas! Wearable Arts forum, under the “WIA” thread of the day.
• Post a link to your treasury in the WetCanvas! Wearable Glass forum.
• Post a link to your treasury as comment in the WETsy blog.
• Let those Etsy seller you feature in your treasury know about it by sending them an Etsy conversation.

How to make a treasury “hot”:

The “hotter” a treasury (this is indicated by different colours of the little squares in front of the treasury title), the more it usually gets noticed, and the likelier it may be for it to appear on frontpage. Criteria for hotness are views, clicks and comments. So – get people to view your treasury and also view the treasuries of your fellow group members. Comment on each treasury of your fellow group members, and click once on all items. This only takes a few moments! :)

And most importantly – have fun!!
